I'm not necesarily arguing that we're near the limit of population supportable by the earth but simply that eventually we will hit that limit.
Hitting that limit the hard way would result in mass die offs and be rather unpleasant. Slowly lowering the birth rate means we don't have such a terrible crash.
Also there is no reason for our population to even reach that limit. What exactly do we as a species get as a result of twice or 10 times the population? There are literally already too many people everywhere. I can't imagine the up side.

What is the problem with lower birth rates?
The only possible issue is that we've constructed our capitalist society under the belief that higher profits are possible every single year and that your economy can continue to grow in size indefinitely.
It's possible to manipulate the numbers to go up and possibly with machinery we can actually continue to increase productivity with less people but sure the number of netflix subscribers will decrease as a result and that might have negative implications for the fake and gay economy

Yeah pretty much. I don't understand why certain people are obsessed with an ever increasing population. There's not logical reason for it and if it continues indefinitely humanity will eventually hit a limit and experience a mass die off.
