One day I decided I was wasting alot of time and money, and just stopped. Had a baby now, so it was time to grow up. Just quit and didn't say anything to anyone but my wife. That was almost 7 years ago. AA might work for some, but it wasn't for me I didn't need a group of losers telling me I was a loser, I knew I was a loser drinking everyday. cons: life fucken sucks and sobriety is boring.
BUT. the benefit of not making a fucking fool of myself is so great that its almost worth life sucking ass.but i HATE ppl at AA who r like "LIFE IS SO GREAT NOW". fuck off. cut the bullshit. sobriety blows. getting fucked up rules. I just cant handle it responsibly. thats MY problem not societys

there are "real alcoholics" and "not real alcoholics". i have always been miserable even as a kid, and the one thing that gave me freedom was when i first drank at 13. blackout first time. blackout constantly ever since. without our "medicine" we go back to the same miserable, scared life that we knew as kids. for guys like US, we need AA or SOMETHING deeper than just "put the plug in the jug" cause when we do that thats when the problems start. im an alcoholic like my dad and his dad before him. real alcoholics. not "wow i was goin crazy there for a bit" alcoholics.

were u miserable ever since u can remember. did u grow up in an alcoholic home? when u put the booze away do u go back to ur baseline of misery? i do. thats why AA is for guys like ME. people who just develop a habit and need some help to stop but are otherwise normal functioning people with no misery issues - IMO i agree, they dont need AA. AA is for people with the issue of ALCOHOLISM which is the issue that caused them to start drinking/using drugs uncontrollabky in the first place. for guys who develop a habit and need to snap themselves out of it - AA does more harm than good.

AA is A cult. For anyone who doesn't know how it works, it's like this; They're aim is to catch people who have come during a particularly vulnerable moment in their life--wife left them, lost everything, etc--They THEN try to encircle you within the group and isolate you from anyone outside of the group so that your ENITRE WORLD becomes AA. They then abuse you by forcing you to head meetings and telling you that you're going to die if you don't. It's fear based and the people involved are complete psychopaths who get off on the control. They're abusers and losers who use "sobriety" and "helping people" as a cover to take advantage and be abusive to new recruits. This abuse is used to isolate you from everyone else in your life who is not a part of AA. Then, once you have been completely surrounded and your life completely overtaken by meetings and events, after some period of time, you are given small amounts of status within the group--expected to tithe, or else--then, if you screw up or try to drop out of AA or cut back on attendance, they use social shame and gossip and threats to get you back in. Your AA friends will start dropping off, refusing to sit near you at meetings, giving you sideways looks in the street, they start gang-stalking you outside your work, until you get back in line with the organization. It's totally fear based. They use their numbers to intimidate and keep you in attendance--this is all done under the guise of "helping you stay sober"--"we're just looking out for you", "we're just worried about you". They will go to psychotic lengths to get you in trouble even--spy on you at the bar, or wherever you may be drinking, and when you get in your car to drive home they'll try to drive you off the road or call the cops on you to get you sent to jail. They are a psycho bunch. I barely got out alive.

I cold turkeyed for 5 years, was hard as fuck, the main thing i remember was the constipation. I had the easiest wettest shits every morning after drinking heavily every night, and when i stopped it was absolutely fucking insane, i was on multiple otc laxatives and chugging black coffee and chain smoking cigarettea every morning to try and shit.

Also im back to drinking regularly now, did the whole quitting to see if i could, but at the end of the day i like getting drunk and it's not like my blue collar laborer ass was ever going to retire or own a home so if i drop dead at work a few years earlier than i would have otherwise it is what it is

Here's the problem. When you don't REALLY want to quit drinking (or taking drugs) but you're TOLD you need to quit and you go along with it, it doesn't work well.

It seems that Matthew didn't really want to quit. Maybe he wanted the people in his life to be happy, so he went to rehabs, he went to AA meetings, he "tried" to quit. He probably did "try" for the people in his life who cared about him. He probably meant well.

When you truly want to quit, in your heart, when you're no longer "trying to quit", but "have quit" that's when it really sticks.

I tried too. I like bourbon, but nowhere near enough to get wasted on it daily. All I ever use it for now is when I have a cold, which is almost never. I took all the hooch I had bought for my new hobby and just made a shitload of vanilla extract with it.

Ironically, I gave up beer to give this a try, and never went back to beer either.

Will power is the only way. There’s no shortcut. Alcoholism like any other drug addiction just masks some inner issue, be it depression, lack of ambition/drive or merely simple boredom. Analyse it systematically and carve out a different path. Alcohol will kill you but very very slowly and in an ugly manner. Your appearance and health will slowly wither away, as will your relationships with people and finally family. By all means drink if you’re overcome by Dionysian madness but 9/10 times it’s a waste of human potential, and thus well and properly baptised the Liquid Jew.

I used to drink alot. Now i drink less. You dont have to quit completely, alcohol is not so bad when in moderation.
You just have to control yourself and drink in moderation. A glas or er even two of wine daily will not harm you at all, its actually associated with longevity and some of the oldest people in the world had a glass daily their whole lives.

>there are "real alcoholics" and "not real alcoholics".
this is driving me crazy. I still don't know whether I am in fact powerless over alcohol. I was a daily drinker for 5 years (a couple of beers and some vodka), but I hardly ever blacked out. I had ceased drinking entirely for 10 months, I attended AA meetings for 3 months, I even acquired a sponsor but I ended up ghosting them and I ultimately didn't work the steps. To my surprise, during the 10 months of my sobriety I didn't find it difficult not to purchase alcohol, I was perfectly content with not drinking, until I wasn't. Now I have been drinking 2 cans of beer every second evening for the past 3 months which I suppose isn't that terrible. I'm not sure whether I'm going to continue to drink a couple of beers every now and again for the rest of my life or if I'm going to progress to drinking excessively at some point

It honestly wouldn't surprise me at all if AA actually killed Matthew Perry for relapsing. There are undercover police that go to meetings in hopes of someone admitting to some crime they committed during their drinking days. They solve crimes this way. AA is largely funded by law enforcement groups. And law enforcement are involved in the gang-stalking portion of AA. The cops know all about AA and how it's used to harrass problem-drinkers--they're part of it. It's a sneaky, dastardly organization that will make your life a living hell unless you make your WHOLE LIFE about promoting the group. There are some people who have done awful things in their addiction who use the group to hide from consequences from their past actions. For instance, maybe somebody committed some awful crime and they are nervous about getting caught for it. They will hide within AA and go balls to the wall in AA, so that if they ever get caught they have the cover of "I don't remember, I was a heavy drinker, but I'm doing something about it now and have recognized I have a problem and am being very proactive about my recovery--I am heavily involved in helping myself and others through AA". Meanwhile, the top brass of AA all know why they're actually there --for cover--and they party and drink together in private. They have private parties for the top brass in every group where the head honchos of the local chapters meet up and get fucked up and screw each other. It's sick--very much like a secret society. full of psychos.

the answer to "do u have an alcohol problem" is supposed to be "if u think u do, u do". but i disagree. to me, if you answer yes to "when you took ur first drink did u feel like finally you felt normal"? then u are an alcoholic. the notion of that drink finally "making u feel like other people look (to you)" - that is the marker of someone with a deep problem that is present even without alcohol that MEDICATES using alcohol. sounds like youre not an actual alcoholic.if u can drink 2 cans every second evening for 3 months? u def arent an alcoholic and just need to watch ur habits like people need to watch any habit.

My experience from quitting cigarettes was that if you quit for a specific reason (or reasons), you're going to fail. Quitting for a specific reason is a promise to yourself. And promises are only good so long as the conditions that existed at the time you made that promise continue unchanged. It's just human nature to absolve yourself of obligations if you can justify it on the basis that "things change." This is why treaties get broken and wars start too, by the way.

You quit for the same reason you stop hitting yourself on the head with a hammer. It was a bad idea to begin with and there's no rational justification for continuing to do it.

The problem is AA wants to label everyone an "alcoholic" because it is good for AA. Their definition is horse-shit. There is such a thing as situational alcoholism, brought on by stressful life situations that is completely different than "I LOVE TO GET FUCKED UP" alcoholism. The group doesn't differentiate between the two and it's wrong. The situational drunk will often quit of his own accord at some point the "I love to get fucked up" alcoholic is a mental-case who won't.

Alcohol was definitely a contributing factor, along with genetics and being out of control (overeating in particular, bad sleep habits, etc.).
Quit drinking alcohol cold turkey in July of 2021. Never looked back.
Also stopped drinking caffeine.
Started eating healthy and working out regularly and getting a good night's sleep, every night.
Heart is now rated healthy and I'm cleared for all activity.

If you've ever endured the assault of someone "making amends," you start to understand the dark downside of AA. For openers, it's more painful than a timeshare sales pitch. It also shows that they believe that they can forgive themselves on your behalf if they simply apologize. No matter what they do to someone (alcohol related or not), they bear no responsibility for it if at some indeterminate point in the future, after the person they inflicted themselves upon endured all the cost and grief to recover and move on with their lives, they simply apologize to them. They are still capable of sociopathic behavior at any time. They simply don't drink anymore.

Yes, making amends is a selfish act for the AAer. They are absolving themselves of any wrong-doing for their behavior. "It was the alcohol, not me, I'm doing something about it now". The truth is, a sober sociopath is even MOREdangerous than a drunk one because they are more calculated. The problem is sociopathy and psychopathy, not alcohol. The alcohol is actually a control mechanism for these types of people because eventually it removes them from society. Would you rather be stalked by a drunk sociopath or a sober one? Which is more dangerous?

It's just not that interesting of a substance honestly. I vastly prefer cannabis. I partake in cannabis every 2 months for a week, 10 days max. I find it more interesting, more tolerable, and more fun; and it has no downsides (inb4 muh ackshully -- shut up, Redditor). Alcohol has shitloads of downsides.

Booze makes you fat, it makes you a sloppy mess, it makes you smell like shit, it makes you do things you don't want to do, it makes you physically less able to do things, it makes you feel like shit in the morning, it makes you fat, it's physically addictive, it can kill you, etc. etc.
The only alcoholic drink I actually like nowadays is Irish cream and something called Shanky's Whip. A small pint of beer is OK. A small glass of wine is OK. But I will never return to the days when I drank like a fish. 5-10 litres of beer in a night. 10 pints a night. Shit like that. No way, never again, a small drink when socializing and that's IT.

Can't understand how you actually become alcoholic, partied like everyone else, when I turned 28 I started to get multiday hangovers so just quit. Don't have time for that shit. I drink like one beer in the summer now and a glass of wine at weddings.

I suffered some tragedy awhile back. My drinking wasn't great before, but now I'm definitely the definition of a functional alcoholic. Similar to other anons said, life is just more boring sober. I can go to sleep easier(although the sleep is not as good). I've found that I'm not physically addicted to drinking, but it's such a habit for me. Once I get the kids to bed, I'm right to drinking. I've realized that nights that I don't drink, the time from 7:30-8:30 is the hardest because that's when I normally start drinking. If I get passed 8:30, I can easily not drink for the night.

most alcoholics gotta realize that no one will feel sorry for you. It's your own doing and you gotta crawl out of this on your own, because no one gives a fuck and you're actually a burden to people around you, while you're drunk

it's weird how universal that expectation of empathy is, with alcoholics. Must be alcohols doing. Or maybe alcoholics are just very emotional people

whats with the animosity lol? prior to AA, there was no treatment for alcoholics. ever, in history. the best thing doctors could do is administer sedatives to control the shakes while the alc is restrained in a hospital. nothing was ever done beyond that care until bill w and dr bob figured out how to discuss the problem with fellow alcs. after the program took off 90 years ago, more and more people contributed to the science of alcoholism as a disease. turns out the best way to "get through" to an alcoholic is to have other alcoholics talk. addiction is the disease, alcohol is the flavor of disease.

Only 1 of the 12 steps is about alcohol/drugs (na is the same thing they replace the word alcohol with drugs so those idiots think it's different. 6 of the 12 steps mention God or a "higher power". I did this shit for 6 years everything is bait and switch it is 100% a cult and it does help when you hit what you perceive to be "rock bottom" but the idea that you need to do it till you die, that it is a disease, or that it's obvious Catholic cult steps will somehow have you doing a 1 on 1 with "god" are fucking ridiculous. I only go back because I'm lonely as fuck and want to be around people forced to listen to me and then we hang out and I socially smoke afterwards. There are many books and online resources for why it's a cult written by doctors and qualified mental health professionals and I highly recommend reading them I have read 3. Bottom line it is a cult but when you stop showing up, in my experience, nobody so much as sent me a text asking if I was alive or dead nobody gives a fuck. HOWEVER I didn't attend the inner cult AA MEN ONLY meetings those mother fuckers do crazy shit like that.

i dont do meetings anymore. but if you actually read the fucking big book is says to keep drinking if you really don't think your alcoholic. I dont know how NY does AA, but regionally, the 'culture' of meetings can be very different from each other. Its not even universal how a meeting is supposed to be ran. I know this from attending meetings in different states. Still, i used meetings from when I needed them, made some friends, and stopped. I'm still friends with those people. honestly you sound miserable to be around, so it wouldn't be surprised if people fucked with you lol.

Over 30 years you could easily hit 6000 meetings, I know people who have probably done close to that.

I hate drug threads because it's always full of retards who know nothing about drugs and drink running their mouths like they know anything. One good thread on/pol/ that might help people help one another and people who've got sick from an alcopop at 15 and never drank again telling anons how drugs and rehabilitation works

I'm actually waiting on a delivery of some bars in the post but think they aren't coming today, post has been shit recently.

If you are thinking of trying hard drugs anon who haven't, in case you think you're the one person on earth who's strong enough to take say heroin and then leave it alone forever, you aren't. Don't say I didn't warn you. If you're doomposting on a site like this you're the exact kind of person who would fall head over heels for heroin.

Anyway, gl to all anon in recovery! you can make it work! You're energy and self worth is better yielded to have an impact on the world. Whatever it may be. Stay strong.

I read it doesn't do anything to the reuptake of dopamine and serotonin, so I suppose you wouldn't get the same hangxiety drinking does.
I'll take this into consideration.

I love beer I learned I loved drinking at 14 when I had my first beers. I drank for twenty years and it finally turned on me. Had an alcohol withdrawal and it was too much for me to handle so I went to the hospital. They gave me benzodiazepine and I detoxed in the ER. It was such a shitty experience I decide to quit. I called my doctor and asked him if he could help and he prescribed me NALTREXONE. It stopped the alcohol cravings completely. I used to crave it like I NEEDED alcohol. 18 months sober now and only went to one AA meeting, I’m antisocial so I didn’t really want to fraternize with other drunks.
