Hell, a Walmart Rotisserie Chicken is a good value, there are a ton of meals I would make when I was on EBT making minimum wage, and living on my own, just by carving meat off. Shephard's Pie, chicken soup, Chicken chili. I could live a week on one chicken.

I used to deliver food from stores to food banks. I wouldn't give 2 shits if Bill Gates gets a plate from the food bank. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. There is more food that is no longer sellable but still good for human consumption. Often there is nothing wrong with it but the store needs to make room for the next shipment. I'd rather ANYONE eats it vs it going in the garbage.
Sometimes they need to find someone to take all the extra food they receive as it's just too much to realistically give out to the people in need.
My mom is still involved in that too and she picks up what a shelter can't keep and feeds her livestock with it. It's either that or it's going in the trash.

I've been to a few when I was really down on my luck and they had a limited supply of items, food banks also don't care to be sued so they're not going to give you past expiration date items if there is a chance of you getting sick. I'm also in the opinion that dumpster diving should be legal but the dumpster diver takes all the risks and cannot sue for expired food or getting injuried.
