Honestly, now later on in life, after knowing about that quote, I think being an older man, he meant that not as disdain necessarily, but more as a neutral wisdom type of thing due to what he saw and experienced on that one with his own eyes, I don't think that quote, assuming it was a real one, was meant with contempt, but I could see why the unwise might see it in such a light.
