It was a war of attrition. The United States, Britain and the Soviet Union gave everything to stop Germany and it proved to be too much.

They could have still won the war if the would have conquered the Soviet Union in the first year. It turns out the splitting the armies instead of going straight for Moscow was a big mistake.

Logistics. He simply didn't have enough of anything to win and maybe knew that from the beginning. Didn't mean he shouldn't have fought. There was maybe always a chance. Same reason you shouldn't just roll over and die if some large predator attacks you, especially if you're trying to protect your wife and children. You're probably fucked, but you should still fight for your life. He was the right man at the wrong time. It was already too late by the time he came to power.
