Intelligence is on a basis of nurture primarily with some nature. Twin studies have shown that people with virtually the same genetics can have drastically different outcomes based on upbringing.

If you want a smart kid, provide a fertile ground of problem-solving games when they are little. Give them plenty opportunity to explore, lift every rock for bugs, and tear apart books and used electronics. Give them a space where they can be open-ended on their thinking skills and not trained to "don't do that" the second they reach for anything and everything. Allow their minds to develop critical thinking at a juvenile age by asking them more questions on what they want to do, how they want to do things; rather than simply telling them how they will live or behave.
