A constitutional republic and democratic republic are roughly the same thing.
The only thing that separates them in definition is a democratic republic's power being derived from the people and not a reigning document. A constitutional republic is more akin to a monarchy, where the king is a document and elected representatives are more like a parliament and prime minister. In the US, the constitution is the most important rule of law, however, the "power" IS directly derived from the people, as stated SEVERAL times in the constitution, making it a democratic republic. The USA is not a constitutional republic, it is not a democracy, it is a democratic republic with a constitution.
Further evidence of this: the constitution stipulates the right to bear arms for ordinary citizens to use against the very government that possesses the ability to amend the constitution. A government for the people, by the people, and of the people is a democratic republic, because the power of the people puts the government and potential amendments to the constitution in check.
I'm not saying your beliefs are wrong, you seem to have a good head on your shoulders, but that statement is wrong, and that distinction is important and needs to be made clear.
