The armband says MP. The Military Police's job on those boats is to execute anyone who refuses to deboard. He also has other duties roughly equivalent to modern "Shore Party" Marines. Meaning he isn't going in the first wave, and he does all the raping in the back line. Remember the scene in band of brothers where the jewish soldier murders a german guy for no reason while Webster pulls security?
