You know how they say that it's about the journey and not the destination? That's what life essentially is. Countless journeys interwoven together into what we call life. Each one has a start and a finish. That's why it's about the journey itself and not the destination because once you're done with one, you're already looking for another, for the next thing to do, endlessly.... and it doesn't have to be anything grandiose either such as obtaining a position of power, great wealth and so on. Many journeys are simple walks outside or quick drives to the gas station or store. There is no inherent meaning of life. We make our own. It just so happens that money is what enables most journeys to happen in the first place. Without it, life would be very stale because every day would be a fight for survival. Think how little you could do, how little free time you'd have if you always had to worry about finding food, water, shelter and safety, and so on....
Money is thus a good metaphor to describe the chase or the journey, many of them in fact, all ending with the inevitable death. Today you might achieve something you set out to do some time ago. Once you're done basking in your accomplishment you'll find something else, some other distraction to keep the thoughts of the inevitable at bay. That's all there is to it.
