As a .milfag, it isn't that fatalist. Unironically ~30% of the military are hard republican. There are democrats, but they tend to be quiet and likely <5%. Everyone else is very agnostic and realizes that it doesn't matter who is in power we do the same shit either way.
But as an American citizen- we've all a duty to be skeptic of authority figures in government and should demand the highest standards for those in positions of authority. Asking the national guard to enforce laws is definitely a political stunt rather than a legitimate use of capabilities. I pity those assholes put onto literal (national) mall cop duty.

Why is it a political stunt? The wayward "youth" in the streets really do cause problems across the USA. Municipal governments are lazy and powerless and do not enforce laws. A ridiculous show of strength is the only way to get the scoundrels off the streets. I am honestly curious as to why you think this way.
