Also, if you read some memoirs the subject of soldiers falling into despair does come up but it's usually something that gets resolved before it gets worse. Even in the horrible conditions of trench warfare during WW1, if someones morale plummeted that guy would get rotated off the frontline because officers were acutely aware of it being contagious.

the mens lives used to be valuable.
now they are just cleaning house and sending all the extra men to die. all governments do this, sometimes they send them to conquer new territories and create new colonies, but mostly when there are just too many fighting aged men with nothing to lose- those in power meet and agree to have border disputes and war to free up property and women for the "exempt"

it'll happen everywhere. nobody is paying attention but india, africa, and even china are all doing the "send all the un needed/ unwanted men to new territories to conquer" thing right now, russia and the middle east are doing the war method.

we will get ours too. just wait.
maybe even civil war style conflict or race war.
