What should be done about the staggering population of invasive dogs in America? They're killing local wildlife, mauling children, and destroying billions in property damage.

The numbers of dogs kept as pets has nearly doubled since the year 2000, but animal control measures haven't doubled in response.

Realistically the most practical self defense option is to carry pepper spray strapped to your palm any time you go out where there may be dogs. Knives and guns work just fine, but you can't walk around with one in your hand. Pepper spray in hand can be deployed at a moment's notice. Many dogs are incredibly fast and strong. The time it takes to get your knife or gun out is time you may not get.

There's about 4.5 million mauling attacks that result in hospitalisation every year. Most victims of dog mauling are children, and I've known two people personally that have been severely mauled by dogs. A girl that I went to school with was mauled by a dog and her face was disfigured with a huge scar, and we were both in 2nd or 3rd grade at the time. Another, a grown man that was bitten badly by a dog, but the wound became septic and his arm was amputated and he lost his arm.

Dogs as pets in concrete jungles really are the issue. Dogs are supposed to have jobs. Sitting in an apartment for 9 or 10 hours just to be let outside for 5 minutes before being let out again before bed time isn't what they were bred for. They are surrogates for children and then when someone falls on hard times its either taken to an animal shelter or just let out on the street.
Restricting pets to when they have a purpose and job would fix it. And barking at the mailman isn't a job so most families in urban environments have no reason to have them.

I've had my garden destroyed by dogs, and my car damaged by them. I've had chickens killed by dogs as well. In most places in America if you have livestock that are threatened by dogs you can put them down without any consequence. These are laws from an era before dogs were treated like children but they are still on the books (for now). If you get some chickens you can put down any dog that steps on your property.

In AZ there was a case in the 90's iirc, where this guy had two dogs and the owner attack him while he was on a hike. He killed the dogs and shot the man. I don't recall wether the owner died or not, but they made a big deal out of it and he served several years because he had a 10mm handgun and the dog lobby said he was out to kill on his hike because of that or something. I think he ended up serving like 2-4 years of his sentence before a repeal but they definitely try to use dog attacks to also just strip you of defending yourself in any way.

When I say you can't walk around with one in your hand, I mean that you are liable to be charged with brandishing for doing so. There is of course also the matter of logistics. Responsible gun ownership dictates a concentrated situational awareness before firing. You can't just go blasting at the first sign of danger. You might kill somebody innocent.

Pepper spray is highly valuable as the readiest option because it is an effective nonlethal deterrent. People should carry multiple weapons. Also if you stab me I will cut your head off.

Threadly reminder that you can feed shitbulls 0.5g per kg of body weight of xylitol and most will drop dead in a few days. Median weight 30kg shitbull, 15g of xylitol. "XL Bully" 90kg "shitbull mix", 45g of xylitol.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is safe for humans (and also kitties!) but lethal to dogs. It is widely available in granular form in health-food stores. (IOW, no, you don't need to feed the dog ten packs of chewing gum.) Just mix it into a doggie treat like sausage or cheese balls.

Xylitol has two separate modes of lethality in dogs: first, the chance of putting the dog into a hypoglycemic coma (within hours), second, liver failure (within days). The above doses are the LD50 (meaning half will die from it) to cause liver failure; the hypoglycemic coma dosage is only 20% of the above. There is no antidote, but it can be treated if caught early, and only about half of dogs will die from a LD50 dose (by definition). The two different modes make it very likely to kill a dog with this dose.

Avoid getting caught on video or making it obvious that you're the prime suspect by complaining constantly ahead of time.

Good way to rid your neighborhood of dangerous dogs.

Sorta. His last name was Harold Fish. He didn't kill the dogs, he just fired in front of them to scare them away (which worked). Also the dogs' "owner" was some aggressive homeless bum whom local residents had had problems with repeatedly.

Finally got the article to load. His conviction was reversed because the judge had rejected the defense's request to prevent evidence that the insane homeless guy was violent and aggressive and had attacked Fish, and apparently the jury instructions were all fucked up as well.
