Wine is not distilled, and histortically it would not be cleaned much before cask storage.
The point here is if the wine sours you can blame the cleanliness (conflated with virtue in Western society) of the women that stomped it, which puts strong societal pressure on women to clean their feet before stomping grapes.

Isn't wine self-sanitizing by the alcohol? Alcohol is a sanitizer that kills bacteria. They use alcohol to cleanse shit. So its probably fine. Not saying foot stuff isn't gross, but the alcohol certainly would kill any harmful pathogens so you wouldn't die from it even if it is nasty to think about it.
