Australian bankruptcy laws allow Karl to emerge out of bankruptcy in 3 years time.

There are enough legal provisions that allow Karl (through his wife) to keep the largest assets (eg. their house).

At that point, Karl will be free and clear. Billy will get nothing more out of him. Billy will never re-coup the legal fees. He will never receive all the damages awarded.

The only way Billy gets any more money is if Karl has an unexpected windfall. Winning the lottery, or getting a huge injection of extra earnings from a job.

Karl will likely deliberately limit his earnings by working less, stop buying lottery tickets, stop looking for second/third jobs.
