The heavy metal music that I like is from the 1980's - 2000's, and is now firmly in the 'old man boomer music' category. The heavy metal they make these days, called Metalcore, is awful and doesn't sound pleasant to my ears. I don't like listening to my old Metal albums anymore, it makes me feel like an old fogey.

I remember going to see Gojira even as far back as 10 years ago (yes i know theyre vegan leftists but their older music is pretty good) and ALL the support bands without fail were unlistenable trash that put so much emphasis on the "heavy" they forgot anything like good sound structure, melody or rhythm, anything that actually makes metal good. And this is coming from someone who likes classic/old school and 90s technical death metal. These bands werent "heavy" in that sense, they were more like "hard" in the hardcore tradition. Somewhat, but "pop punk" is the whitest subgenre of music to exist. Some black people like cannibal corpse and whatnot. Lots of japs too. Metal is super popular, like last year I saw Archspire and Aborted; place was packed to the gills. It's particularly impressive since no one gets any radio time or advertisement. Like the new Cytotoxin album that came out in april has about 80k plays on a couple songs, and it was relatively mid from a random german band. Bleed the Future, probably one of the best albums in 20ish years, has a bunch of songs over 2 million views, and that came out 4ish years ago. Drown in Sulphur, who has the "best" album of 2025 has a few songs around 200k views, job for a cowboy has a couple around a million from their late 2024 album, and Goldstar (who I dont particularly like) who has the best reviewed album of 2025 has around 400k views.

Even back in the day with melodic wanky guitar solos, you can reasonably practice to become a cheap Yngwie knock off, but 99.9% of professional guitarists cant play a single animals as leaders song because Tosin is a goddamned mutant. So iterations are less frequent, and genre defining innovation becomes even more rare. Nothing to do with power chords and screaming, as you put it.

The classical music cannon is vast, and your "classically influenced" metal is just repeating a set of pop culture tropes to create a facade of sophistication. Usually directed at misguided young adults who like the sound of metal and don't fit into the classical music world and failed at their childhood piano or violin lessons but want to "show" their music teachers/parents that what they listen to is still elitist enough to be apprecieted by the musical elite (it mostly isnt).

It's why "classical music teacher reacts to megadeth" type videos are so damn popular.
