The way I remember it, was that in the 80's and 90's everybody loved black people and black people were just like us. It really wasn't until later in the 2010's that there was a big shift and suddenly black culture was no longer similar to high quality white culture, it had devolved into ghetto gang culture and drug use and sexual excess and abusiveness and racism. So now black people are seen as uncivilized barbarians who are a threat to white society that needs to be handled with a firm violent reaction. We used to love black people and get along.

I think it really depended on where you lived. If you lived somewhere like Chicago then you probably definitely saw the color divide and "never relax" was ingrained into you. New Orleans and California were different and Millenials there grew up with a different outlook. Sure there was racism and a divide but it was more in the background and fading away.
