Lincoln was originally against abolition and even renounced the abolitionists during his first presidential campaign. Both Dems and Reps were against it as well. In fact, the abolitionists were threatening to break away from the Republican party and start their own. But the Dems called him out on that, pointing out that he, just the same as everyone else, had benefitted from the slave trade, and to say otherwise made him a hypocrite.
