When you produce only intellectual property as opposed to physical property, the marginal cost of making more units is zero. As a result, it is good marketing practice for your own company to buy up enough "copies" of the product to push it to the top of the sales rankings. Some 90% of the cost of this comes right back to the company so it is very cost efficient. Games companies and movie studios have been doing this for years.

AC is a very disjointed franchise which doesn't even know what kind of audience it wants but Shadows is a genuinely bad game even if you ignore the ugly nigger.

I’m pretty sure that Ubisoft has multiple studios working on the assets and design of the same game and that each studio has its own idea of what it wants to do. Then the release deadline starts getting close and they just smash it all together and there you go. It’s why Asscreed Shadows has systems that are completely at odds with the maps, and why certain areas look inconsistent.
