Why isn't South America as popular of a tourist destination as South East Asian countries?
Everyone I know who went to an exotic place in winter went to either to the Maldives or SEA and it makes me kind of mad.
Instead of visiting your Roman(and German) cousins in Argentina and Chile you go to those SEA monkeys.
I remember that as a kid South America was seen as kind of a second Europe and played a pretty big role in my education like surfers, astronauts, paragliding, asteroids and prison. Argentina was basically Spain 2.0 and Brazil wasn't thought to be some place filled with La Abominciones but instead a white country with some racial minorities. Only places like Bolivia and Central America had a foreign air.

I've never been to either (note my flag), but I'd much rather visit or move to South America than SEA, and my guess as to why people choose SEA is sex tourism, especially targeting children.
A lot of countries in SEA like Thailand, Vietnam are so notorious for child exploitation, that reputationally, you'd best avoid them entirely so you can truthfully say you've never been there.

There's plenty tourism in here still, but it for sure doesn't match old times. I can't find foreigners outside of the beaches of Rio as often, except the Czech. Why do they keep coming here? Brazil was more difficult for me to get permission to visit than other South American countries. Ecuador did visa-on-arrival and I don't remember paying a fee. Argentina was having a temper tantrum over visa fees charged by the US so they required a reciprocal payment but I could do that online. For Brazil, I had to appear in person at a consulate in the US and bring along bank statements to prove I wasn't a poorfag planning on slumming in Brazil forever. I had to be photographed and fingerprinted to get a visa, and pay something like $180.
Paraguay didn't even look at my passport and Peru simply rubber stamped us in. I'm sure Brazil has reason to be paranoid but compared to other South American countries, it's not as welcoming.

Just buy some textbooks online or try to find free copies. Rote memorization is good and works for learning conjugations and new words. Also reading books, when you have the ability to do so, will help you learn the language and new words. Really try thinking in Spanish. Even simple things like "hoy es un buen día" or "me gusta el sol" will help. I chose to study it because even in middle school, I knew that America was getting full of hispanics and that trend will accelerate. I was at a walmart and they had Spanish on the signs in addition to English. So I figured Spanish was the most useful language for me to learn, being an American. French and German were also offered at my public school, but those seemed like useless languages in comparison. French has some utility to know in leaf land but not in burger land.

It really depends on your situation. If you were remote, but with an American company, Buenos Aires is great. I also like Peru and Colombia, but safety is an issue. Cost of living is among the cheapest. Another con of South America is how far it is from other places.
Time doesn't matter as much to me, so I prefer east asia and europe

That's really weird. As an American, even in the 1990s Brazil was known as a place with a mostly-black population that would rob and maybe kill you in random street robberies if you went there as a tourist.
