You dont use an AED then. Just CPR.
All you're doing if you use am AED is cooking the poor lads heart. They don't start your heart beat. They stop fibrilation. Irregular heart beats. If the heart has stopped all together, all you can and should do is chest compression.
Keep pumping their blood for them until EMTs arrive, and they may be able to give some adrenaline.
Now, you can use electricity to start a heart, however it must be directly focused onto the heart. Literally touching the heart itself. This is usually how it is done after heart surgery. If massaging doesn't work, a quick low voltage zap will get it going.
But never NEVER use a difibeulator on someone whose heart has completely stopped. No pulse? No shock.
Usually the AEDs will walk you through, but just in case, or maybe the instructions are in a different language. Learn CPR, it's technically easy, but it is energy intensive. You're gonna get a workout.
Don't do rescue breathing. Waste of time, if you're doing the chest compressions properly, you're pumping air as well anyway.
Just keep their blood flowing.

Also with CPR. Which I kinda understand, you can't really do CPR on an actor, it hurts... a lot. But ya really gotta pump it. I mean HARD press very very hard in a rhythmic fashion. Probably gonna hear some bones cracking a little bit. You're definitely gonna hear them wheezing as you pump.
Not a bad idea to take a BLS class. Many places have days where they will teach anyone for free. Good skills to have.

If we talk about sudden cardiac arrest of pre-2021 character, it is usually arrythmia or ischemic. AED cant destroy heart as you suggested. This thing wont generate a shock in case of somebody having a pulse or non-shockable rythms. The device would need to have malfunction to work differently. You always use AED first. If it doesnt work, you continue with CPR. You can mix these two things in the process.
