It was a direct consequence of involuntary desegregation. Cars didn't destroy the cities, the war on whites did. White flight resulted in dense urban cores becoming derelict, and car infrastructure filled the void. That's why this only happened in the US and not in any of the other countries with massive auto industries like Japan, Germany etc. There are plenty of other countries with huge auto industries that have disproportionate influence over government policy, but none of them have this problem because the root of this problem isn't cars or the auto industry, it's how the US mishandled it's race problem. Bad urban planning is a hack workaround for not being able to chose who you want to live around. By making it a pain in the ass to walk anywhere you can protect yourself from the chaos of the US's botched desegregation. If the US had just allocated a bunch of states to serve as black homelands, a bunch of states to serve as white homelands and a bunch of states to act as "special economic zones" that were open to all races then bad urban planning wouldn't be necessary as a workaround solution to failed racial integration and the US would still have normal cities.

His planning efforts obliterated half the neighborhood where my parents owned their first house together--shipyard workers row houses, very tidy. But the capital class wanted to be able to get from Philly to Wilmington and Baltimore, and they didn't want to rebuild the older interstate roads nearer the river PLUS they owned land down in that part of the city. Idea was they'd destroy our neighborhoods for the cheaper land (eminent domain) then their land would be worth more.
It was after that that the white flight thing happened because
a) Moses and his bankster and industrial partners (like the DuPonts) destroyed/punched through white neighborhoods using eminent domain and
b) the shekel spree of redeveloping the industrial areas didn't happen, so turned into total slums occupied by the usual dusky suspects
c) so then whites had to get out because there were no jobs and tons of duskies
"Desegregation" is bullshit. People will always self segregate, and the effort to communistically impose "integration" destroyed city after city, which added to the "white flight" thing.

That city was already well into decline before it got rezoned for a highway interchange. Nothing lasts forever, once upon a time Pittsburgh and Detroit were industrial capitols of the country.
