Someone reported that it went way over budget, the studio denied it of course, nevertheless the $310m figure is on Wikipedia, though it appears they got tax breaks for shooting overseas.
They also like to claim that it made more money than it's predecessor. That's true, assuming you just ignore 20-odd years of inflation. It had *less* interest than the original if you take that into account.
I know three people who went to the original who didn't go to the cinema for this one, and of those three, I was the only one who even bothered to pirate it. My other two friends were like "meh, fuck it". I should've done the same, but I like Roman history.

They do understand it, they just don't like it. That's why they spent the last 20 years trying to forcibly change what attracts young men. It didn't work, they burned through their money, and now they're panicking, so they fall back to old habits like doing things by committee. That way you can't really hold any of them responsible, after all, "it was the committee's decision, not mine" and there's no way disney's going to fire a whole committee's worth of women due to the bad PR it would create, at least in their minds.

I think that of the top 10 movies so far this year, only 3 or 4 have actually made a profit, most of the top 10 have been box office failures. Of course there's lots of reasons for this in that people prefer to not waste money in a shitty economy on slop they can watch at home.

The pollack is though, and you defended his position that historical movies won't sell by going off about gladiator not being profitable. Movie studios making a profit on their films is a totally separate issue from the actual box office numbers and the popularity of the film implied by ticket sales.
Gladiator 2 didn't need to make a profit, it still made more money than a lot of other films. The setting is not a poison pill.
