A 30-month sentence is said to be reduced to 20 months, but in reality a 20-month sentence is increased to 30 months for daring to demand the state prove the case against you. It puts immense pressure on people to plead guilty. It also puts pressure on defence barristers to advise their client to plead guilty, as they'd essentially be ensuring they serve more time. There's also the issue of attempting to keep any sentence below 24 months to keep the possibility of it being suspended. There's also no right to a preliminary hearing here. This is where the prosecution have to prove there's enough evidence for the charge to proceed to trial.
