Trump vs Cartels
US military preparing for attacks against armed drug groups in Mexico
The administration of US President Donald Trump has ordered troops to prepare for deadly attacks targeting drug cartels inside Mexico. According to three military sources, a top-secret order issued this spring instructed to be ready for an attack by mid-September.
Although the US-Mexico military relationship is long-standing, direct operations south of the border are considered highly sensitive for both countries. Still, a senior intelligence official said the Trump administration is prepared to take unilateral action.
In July, a meeting was held at the US Northern Command headquarters in Colorado Springs on this matter.
A few days later, US General Gregory M. Guillot met with top Mexican army and navy officials.
