Does nature or nurture explain this pattern.

Nothing has ever been explained by nurture.

In the USA, we were on track to have a similar set up but then two things happened:
1. Niggers destroyed cities pushing whites into suburbs (but we still had electric trains at first)
2. Automobile industry kikes

America mogs the world in freight rail tonnage. We move people by plane and automobile. There's no need or popular desire for expanding the passenger rail system.

it just proves corruption. we know how industrious the Americans have been throughout history, so it just goes to show that their best interests are not being represented while their nation gets plundered by usurers.

this
check population density for europe, japan, and the united states
it makes no sense to build passenger rail when your country is huge and there's hundreds of miles between towns and cities. the branching factor is too great to build a rail line between each. air travel only requires airports, and laying asphalt is cheaper and has more diverse uses than laying rail.

Yep that fits.

The US moves more tons of freight more miles than any other nation both in total and per capita.

It's a disingenuous map anyway. America has one of the densest rail coverages despite low population density. These maps are about MUH HIGH SPEED RAIL which is meaningless in North America where people have the freedom to drive themselves wherever they want.

yeah rail is all over the place just not high speed, I live near a rail intersection and at least 4x a day we get mile-long trains loaded with freight coming through

I support computer and HSR even though irs a waste here and let me explain

Population density, the USA only has the density for high speed rail to make sense among the northern Atlantic coast

Everywhere else is rural to semi rural, even our major cities out west you could bring a train into the city center but the cities themselves are largely suburban in character with little in the way of local train networks to make the network really useful and convenient like seen in Europe or Japan.

Even Manhattan, by far the densest place in North America and one of the densest areas on earth 20% of daily commuters (1/5) drive in a single occupancy car from home outside the island

Trains will not make sense for travel in America for a very long time, if you real want trains support the buildout and improvement of local and regional mass transportation systems, then down the line you link these sequestered local and regional rail/bus/tram networks via dedicated direct high speed rail routes

Even if we had high speed rail, let's assume the network exists for a moment, nobody would use it. People here have family and friends around the country, we are significantly more mobile than our cucked European and Asian friends. I live in Boise, and I fly to Phoenix a few times a year to visit. It's about 1000 miles and a 1hr 45min flight. A high speed rail trip would cost me about the same, maybe even more, and take anywhere from 6 to 9 hours. That fucking sucks. Why would I ever choose that over a cheap flight?

Also in the majority of the country, there simply isn't anything within high-speed rail range of another city. Most states have 1 or 2 major urban/cultural centers, with only small towns and such everywhere else. The next urban area is an hour flight away, which would be like 3-4 hours on rail. Even if it existed, it wouldn't have the customers to support it.

US uses cars and airplanes instead of trains. It makes some sense. The population centers are especially spread out (east coast to west coast is most dramatic example) with little of note in between. Trains make more sense when the path is full of useful destinations.
Also the population density is lower in the US which means more space available for car use. More parking, wider roads, etc.
But it would make sense to have high speed passenger rail from at least DC to Boston and San Diego to San Francisco.
