One thing I dislike is how a lot of stories just make the villains crazy rather than come up with a solid motivation.

In Matrix, even though it requires suspension of disbelief, turning humans into batteries made sense as a motivation for the machine. Cypher wanting to live a better life in the Matrix made sense. Morpheus wanting to defeat the machines and free humanity made sense. Survival, luxury, self-determination.

Compare that to something like Game of Thrones where most characters are just nuts and them sperging out is just meant to be entertaining. However, the characters everyone likes are the ones who had solid and sane motivations even if they were villains.

The motivation of a trans person makes no sense. The idea of changing your sex is a difficult or impossible task with no discernible benefit. In the Game of Thrones books, the characters' motivations are a lot more fleshed out and they make a lot more sense.
