Democracy did not really work in europe, people are just not used to participating in politics, they don't care, they think someone else is going to tackle to complicated topics, and that's it.
Then the superrich took over, and did whatever they liked to do, namely making money. Let's call it the Berlusconi-Era.
People got angry, started hating democracy even more, felt left out and powerless.
Add to it, that Europe is actually losing it's position and privilege on the world stage, globalization has favoured BRICS and thirdies, Europeans are relegated down to a non-world power status and are only relevant as EU.
So the right elites mobilized the masses, it's what we call populist-right, with all the tricks of the trade of propaganda, like a bogeyman (the foreign invader), narratives and a shared identity (Identitarian movement).
They're fucked quite frankly.
