Because our nation was founded on the idea of self-reliance. We unironically do not believe in community or cooperation with our neighbors. We believe everyone is responsible for their own problems and if you can't handle your problems, then fuck you and you deserve every bad thing that happens to you.

We are a nation of individuals, plain and simple. Foreigners generally struggle with this when they come to the US because they come from more collectivist societies.

That's a modern thing that's been around 30-40 years. Before that, especially before cell phones and internet and the browning of the west, people were heavily invested in their community and neighbors. Independent and yet connected.
What foreigners are struggling with is that our low trust society is so low that it's impossible to even talk to strangers without being treated like some sort of psychopath. Ever in their shithole countries you could talk to people.

Yes you are correct that things being the way they are now is relatively recent, but I would say it was the inevitable evolution of our nation based on the ideals it was founded on. The US has always placed a very high value on the individual over the collective, and that emphasis on the individual has only gotten more extreme over the roughly 250 years of our existence.

I do agree that the Internet and smart phones have accelerated the process, but I think the way we are now was always the inevitable outcome of our founding fathers' ideology.
