In a recent DDoS attack, the hacktivist collective Anonymous targeted MasterCard, Visa, and PayPal as part of its Operation Payback campaign. This action was a response to the companies' actions against donations to Wikileaks. The attack led to significant outages of these financial institutions, disrupting their services.

When payment processors started taking internet seriously, it became a professional space, not a hobbyist one.
Google has made a big contribution to that with adsense.
And of course, when there is money involved, there is always corruption and manipulation.
That said, Internet, has always been a military technology. People think their data is being sold etc. But direct access to your brain via exposure is much more valuable than your data.
2001 and onwards, in short.

Can you elaborate on that? I was barely in kindergarten. Although, if I can recollect some zoomer memories, the Internet was still very much great up until 2007ish. MySpace wasn’t rife with ads, bots and Jewish degeneracy… YouTube was at its peak and a lot of rogue or actual informative forums didn’t get purged up until 2009/2011.
