Baby land crab season has started in my area.
These babies will get to be the size of sheep by the end of the season.

My question is why haven't any big companies come in and started processing them into meat? They get so big that we don't even have stray dogs or cats any more. Or bids.

That would mean raising them instead of just catching them in the wild. Then you have to feed them, and wait for them to grow. It starts to lose economic viability.

they eat toxic garbage and because of that the meat tastes nasty and isn't good for you. if you raised them in a farm off something good they'd taste better but then >>513767319

That is a coconut crab
I almost got one as a pet. Then I decided to get a Berber Skink instead
I named him Sunny

So? Why not domesticate them?

>>513767380
>they eat toxic garbage
Why not confine them and feed them kale and lab-grown meat?

can you train them, like attack dogs?

it would be prohibitively expensive. probably end up being more money than just harvesting wild large crab species.

Checked but they are too tough to eat and too large to usefully harvest. They weigh 200 pounds when mature you know. Just an armored eating machine.

i've wanted to do this since i moved here in 16
decided it wasn't a good idea
everyone here eats coconut crabs and you'd have to train it to be particularly mean for it to protect itself
like having an attack-crocodile in your front yard, you want an attack-creature that respects you and not your enemies
I'm not sure you could get both out of coconut crab
I have met/seen one that was trained though.
this guy had one at a weekly tourist flea market here that he had domesticated to take pictures with the japs/koreans. It was docile. So they can be trained to some extent I guess.

Her plane was found a few years back. Turns out she met a vibrant and enriched death at the hands of people who truly didn't know any better, and no laws were broken.

In reality, she defected to the Nazis and became Leni Reifenstahl.

They can't be eaten, they have too much urea in the flesh. Same reason you don't eat hermit crabs. It helps them to move on land. Land crabs anon, these are land crabs.

Because scavengers as a rule taste like trash. It takes a really special set of genetics to make meat that is neural in taste if all you eat is garbage.
Anonymous (ID: eAPl0lma) Guam No.513768962
you leave the coconut crab in a 5 gallon home depot bucket with a pre-opened coconut for a couple weeks before you eat them
same way you "purge" bathtub carp
I imagine they taste worse the bigger they get but fear not, ones like the pic in OP are all but extinct outside of the most remote islands. Takes them like 50-75 years to get that big.

It takes one look at the urea compound to determine that it is a water soluble molecule. That is also intuitively obvious from how you expel urea yourself.
