There was a real explosion of creativity in Western culture, expressed very clearly in music, but also in film and on television, in the second half of the 20th century. It wasn't just astroturf, though some of it was. A lot of it was genuine.
I think latter (post 1950) 20th century "popular" Western music will be considered one of the all time most important periods of music in history, up there with the period from Baroque, through Classical (proper), and then Romantic music (all three genres are "classical" broadly).
Moreover, the second half of the 20th century, beginning in the 50s in North America and about the 60s in Europe (after recovery from the war), was probably the most ebullient, happy, and satisfied period in all of world history for the people at large and not just the elites.
