That's illegal. Hourly workers are required to be paid overtime. Salary workers makeing more than 36k a year (this number hasn't changed in like 20 years) are excluded and it's up to them to refuse to work if an employer is not paying them extra for extra hours. Even at ~200k a year I refuse all overtime unless the cause for that extra work is myself. Meaning I created a bug, or one of my direct reports did and it needs to be fixed or I agreed to a date and I am at risk of missing it. Otherwise fuck them, I aint working extra. It's not a bad thing, but it depends on your goals at a specific time in your life. If you are putting in the hours and effort when you're in your 18-24 years, you will climb faster than those who do not. The idea is you should be having less of a work-life balance in your formative years, and more in your later years when you're having a family etc.

I'm in this situation right now, nearly 40 at my job with enough knowledge and wisdom to make me a wizard. Both tribal knowledge of our ins and outs, as well as general development/architecture of systems. I can crank out great stuff in a short amount of time because I have good patterns and know my way around our codebases.

Of course, in my young years I spent a LOT of time doing sideproject and curiousity shit instead of going out to the club every night or getting piss drunk.
