I have never owned a gun for 30 years. When should I get it?

Just follow the guide. But anyway, the quick answer is a Mossberg 500 series 12ga. shotgun. Affordable, great for bird hunting, great for killing intruders. Legal everywhere, even Canada. It really does it all.

You should be already adding a gun to your existing collection of guns.

You literally don't need a gun. If you want one, sure, to show off to your friends, maybe go shooting. But you don't need one. Not to live in America. I've never owned one and I'm 38. I live in a pretty rough area of Kentucky. Just stay safe and make good decisions.

Notice how I'm not even calling you a pussy or any other typical gun control tactics. I'm literally just saying you don't need one. It's okay to not have guns as an American. That's all.

you need more than a gun, you need a squad, a cadre, a group of associates that collectively cover a broad stroke of supporting talents and abilities in trades, medicine, agriculture, transportation, veterans. You meet these people at the gym (you are training right?), the range, while volunteering for political causes. The gun is important but the person behind the gun and the people behind the person and the gun are most important.

Finally bought a gun for home protection
Feels great knowing I can actually reach for something now and win whenever I hear a random noise at 3 am lying in bed

Before I usually coughed loudly and made low grumbling noises in an effort to scare away potential home invaders while realizing 911 would never reach me in time to protect me

You are not meeting your responsibility toward your country. The phrase "Kentucky Rifleman" is a long tradition in your state.

Don't be this guy. Make shooting part of your skillset.

As other anons mentioned, Mossberg 500 for general home defense. Buckshot solves all problems. For a lighter, reliable and portable option I recommend picking up a Rossi M88 .38 caliber revolver. Rossi purchased the tooling from S&W and hired a bunch of Germans to run the machinery back in the 80s, the ones you want say “imported by Interarms”. Extremely well built, reliable, cheap and effective.

Given that you don’t shoot much I recommend the revolver because it will always go off when you pull the trigger. Slide action pistols like glocks are great but you have to have proper form when shooting them or there’s a chance they’ll jam due to limp-wristing. Not to mention being caught in close quarters and having to shoot off hand, or from a weird angle.

For “extreme” home defense (5+ intruders), any bottom of the barrel AR (PSA) or cheap AK will do. I’ll let other anons chime in as to their recommendations on that front.

What would you know about that Limey? In 1775 in Concord, your government tried to seize weapons from settlers and they shot one. They got chased by farmers in a rolling ambush all way back to Boston Harbor. America started it's war of independence. To this day Americans value individual riflemen down at the citizen. level.

We still train to shoot as civilians as a foundation of American life.
