The employer is required to pay them at least minimum wage if their tips don't make up the difference from $2.13. The fact that servers kvetch to high heaven when people advocate for them to get paid at least minimum and eliminate tips should tell you how well they're being paid because of this out of control tipping culture.

Yeah, so there's this thing that people sometimes do called "lying" where they tell you something that isn't true. I know, shocking isn't it? While servers make $2.13 per federal minimum wage, they have to leave with at least minimum wage (tips to minimum) and in reality make far more than that with tips - they just pocket that money and don't report it for taxes. Servers are some of the biggest crybabies in the job market, crying about $2.13/hour while walking off a good shift with $100+ in their pockets.

Service staff were redundant in the 1930s, America had the Automat and HATED service staff. Just like they hated tipping. In Japan they kept that hatred and relied heavily on machines. This is why they have a vending machine 'culture'.
