Russian sumy offensive

This is probably the most pointless russian ”offensive” of this whole war. They captured some untenable border villages that had nobody defending them in the first place, advanced where the Ukrainians allowed them, then they stopped and the whole area became a killzone.
So what was the point, was it just a PR stunt?
