It's a complete waste of time. Sure I can change my own oil but then I would have to waste my time making sure I have enough containers to hold the oil and then I waste more time bringing the oil to an auto shop rather than just spending $50 for a professional to do it while I do something more worth my time.

No, and I don't have the time, that's why I brought it to you.
>Ahhh geeze, come on its simple to fix, it just takes an entire day!

You know what I did, I said fuck him and took it to another mechanic, and now his shop is closed down because the dumb fuck wanted to be captain impressive about how "AH COME ON DOOD! DONT YOU KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS!"

His whole job is fixing peoples car's, thats like if I went to some pricks job at a company and asked them to manufacture something.

While specialization may be for insects, it's has a lot of advantages here.

You could do it yourself, and fix and issue a couple times, or you can take it to someone that has fixed the issue continuously and over many years. Who is likely to do a better job and who likely already has everything they need to do the job?

its all chepa garbage and its just cheaper to buy new and waste the old stuff. "eco green save planet" communist thinktanks don't account for that for pollution and waste so its okay. at worst we can ship the garbage back to china and pretend they disposed of it properly and didnt just burn or dump it in a river then say there was no pollution.

Latest project is a non-turbo diesel with no computer, no "limp mode", no particulate filter or regeneration burner or engine piss rot tank. It emits no, as NO, visible smoke. Mechanical injection. Everyone who said in needs more pollution crap is a liar. Diesels just need regular maintenance and oil changes. The only need for a turbo on a diesel is to get enough power at higher altitudes when driving through mountains.

The answer is multi fold:
- Many people lack the space to either store all the tools they'd need (this includes stands and a jack btw) or a place where they can do work. Working on your car on the side of a street or a public garage really fucking sucks.
- A lot of modern tech (from small electronics to engines) is anything from actively hostile to people trying to repair it to simply very very complex. I can do all maintenance and a lot of fixes on my 1999 Miata as a self-taught retard, but would I do anything more complex than say sparkplugs on a modern BMW (for example)? Fuck no! Even those sparkplugs probably need to be registered with the car's ECU or they'll get rejected as "non genuine" or some bullshit like that.
- There's a real lack of mentors and opportunities to learn. People say "just watch youtube lol" and that can work sometimes, but there's no replacement to an old hand (grandpa, uncle, friend) walking you through the different jobs.
- Very often it's just cheaper to throw away and replace something broken than bother to fix it so people just stopped caring.

Just my perspective as someone who wants to the confidence of a self-taught mechanic, but is struggling to get there.

This repair of an obsolete wire harness was necessary because the previous owners were incapable and the Ford mechanic stood behind the service manager and shook his head "no". “Personal liberty largely consists of the Right of locomotion — to go where and when one pleases — only so far restrained as the Rights of others may make it necessary for the welfare of all other citizens. The Right of the Citizen to travel upon the public highways and to transport his property thereon, by horse drawn carriage, wagon, or automobile, is not a mere privilege which may be permitted or prohibited at will, but the common Right which he has under his Right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Under this Constitutional guarantee one may, therefore, under normal conditions, travel at his inclination along the public highways or in public places, and while conducting himself in an orderly and decent manner, neither interfering with nor disturbing another’s Rights, he will be protected, not only in his person, but in his safe conduct.”

II Am.Jur. (1st) Constitutional Law, Sect.329, p.1135

“The right of a citizen to travel upon the highway and transport his property thereon, in the ordinary course of life and business, differs radically and obviously from that of one who makes the highway his place of business and uses it for private gain, in the running of a stage coach or omnibus. The former is the usual and ordinary right of a citizen, a common right, a right common to all, while the latter is special, unusual, and extraordinary.” - Ex parte Dickey

Wrong it costs me 35 dollars to do my 8 quart of oil truck. Toyota dealership charges around 100 and over torques your filter housing which can cause leaks from over pressurizing the system. It takes longer to wait at the dealership + drive there and back as it does to grab oil when you're at Costco and a filter at wal mart. I don't believe you don't drive passed a place that recycles used oil on at least a weekly basis. I really just fuck with topping off refrigerant, psf changes, oil changes, air/cabin filter changes and throwing seafoam in the oil 500 miles before a change every once in a while and a good detergent cleaner every 5k miles in the gas tank. The tundra is a beast when you take care of it.

Let's say that person actually has the skill and the will to do it.
Young people nowadays don't own cars in the first place, as they're too fucking expensive for a lot of people.
If they do have one, they don't have the place to fix them.
If they have the place, they don't have all of the tools.
If they have the tools, you still can't fix the damn thing because it's likely the fault is in the electronics, which simply died due to planned obsolescence.

Worst part is that outside expensive bigger things like cars, it's often cheaper to buy new things.
I usually fix whatever I can in my home since I like doing stuff like that, but the sad fact is that fixing things isn't really worth it, aside from the good feeling and skill increase you get from it.
Will I repaint the kitchen shelves? Fuck no, you can get a brand new ones for the price of the can of paint.
Should I fix the coffee maker? New one costs only a bit more than the replacement part.
I bought a new bulb for the microwave and the fucking thing was like €14 from Amazon, proper OEM part would have been like triple that.
Microwave cost me €85, so the bulb would have cost about half of the damn thing.
Everything is going the way of printers. It's cheaper to buy a new printer than a new ink cartridge.

Depends on the race. Whites have enough money they just throw shit away and buy new things. Brown people tend to be more interested in repair because they're poor and can only get jobs that involve driving around in a blown out Honda Accord so you'll often see them at autowreckers searching for parts to sustain themselves. Blacks are just niggers that can't afford anything so they have nothing that needs to be fixed or it was stolen anyway so they don't care when it breaks.

Nothing is worth fixing anymore, it's all cheap throw away shit. And most of it is designed to be completely unrepairable. For example having to mail a bmw abs pump off to eBay because it's computer controlled with security and replacement parts literally do not exist. Or a cvt transmission that is literally unserviceable by anyone and self destructs at 80,000 miles by design

Maybe. In my experience majority of independent mechanics don't give a fuck. You're just a customer and it's just a job. But I am sure exceptions happen. Depends on the shit needing fixing. Electronics are very difficult to fix nowadays. Laptops, tablets, and phones are often glued and have to be pried apart with little pieces of plastic breaking off in the process. There are delicate little ribbon cables that can be ripped off their connector even if you’re careful. When you put these back together they flex and will never feel like they did new. Even if you take an iPhone to an Apple Store to get a battery replaced you have this problem or they put the wrong length screws back into the wrong holes. They’re assembled partially by machines and precision instruments, they’re not meant to be disassembled anymore. Cars you can still fix at least but people are no longer interested in fixing them

Lack of skill combined with more and more things being made to be unfixable or not worth the cost of fixing. Ever tried to fix an appliance with a bad control panel? Buying the parts costs almost as much as just buying a new one. And you can't get a repair guy in the door and have them do the repair for less than buying a new one. What are you doing to that tranny? I had my 3/4 clutch plates burn out which is a common problem in 4l60e transmissions. I really wanted to fix it myself but opted for a transmission shop instead. The parts kit would have been at least $1500 plus some specialty tools (which you don't technically need) and a tranny jack would have been another $500-1000 with the high risk of doing something wrong like not putting it back together correctly as a first timer. I felt like I wasn't really saving enough money to justify doing it myself and a 3 year unlimited mile warranty pretty much sealed the deal. Still, it probably would have been a good learning experience. However, I do all the work on my motorcycles though and just replaced the door lock actuators and third brake light on my truck. All products are disposable, unrepairable junk now
Engineered to be like that

In many cases it is actually more expensive to make a product that breaks easier or is harder to repair, but it is more profit in the long run

For example, while matetial costs are not very significant, getting certain pieces within dimensional tolerances (thinner) that guarantee failure by fatigue right after the warranty expires can be quite tricky

The startup cost for fixing your own shit is prohibitive. Harbor Freight makes it a lot better than it used to be, but it's still bad.
If you want to change your own oil, the bare minimum you need is
>Floor jack
>Jack stands
>Catch pan
>Ratchet & sockets or a wrench
Even if you're cheaping the fuck out, your first oil change costs several times what a shop would charge you. To do any real repairs is going to cost you more in other specialty tools like torque wrenches, bespoke sockets, trim removal tools, screw drivers, etc.
You also need a place to work. If you're a city slicker street parking is bad place to start. If you live in apartment or an HOA their lot or your driveway may be off limits due to policy.

Which is a massive pain for your average person. You're now paying 2x for insurance even if one sits in your garage most of the time. If you live in an apartment that might not be possible, since there is normally limited parking, and you'll have to pay for an extra spot.

Payments are lower than purchasing a vehicle because you are only paying for the vehicle's expected depreciation. At the end of the lease you have the option of buying it out which can be a great deal if the residual value ends up higher than what the manufacturer projected. It's a perfectly fine option if you know what you are getting into. The real key is always negotiating down the vehicle's price.

But of course the only chads are ones who buy cars for cash outright. I'm sure all of us are capable of doing that, right anon?

Lucky we had this horrible thing called "cash for clunkers" where you could trade in any functional car for a $2,500 rebate off a new car. What this lead to was greedy boomers buying up every reliable cheap car and trading them in. The auto dealerships then destroyed these cars. Now even 16 years later there are no cheap used cars because they were all destroyed in this government boondoggle. Thanks King Nigger!
