The lowland Scots (who are 80% of the Scottish population) adopted Germanic language and customs of their own volition (lowland Scots have been speaking a form of English since the 9th century) and then enforced it onto the rest of Scotland. They were frequently in the same kingdoms as northern England and are most closely genetically related to the northern English.

Unless you live on one of the outlying islands there's a high chance you're a close cousin of the English LARPing as Gaelic.
