It's an artifact of something being covered up with realistic fake terrain.
When Google Maps first came out there were all these places with black boxes over parts. It was like a giant red flag saying, "there's something really interesting here. Go check it out!"
NOW they create fake terrain, often by altering a section of real terrain, so that it's not obvious (to humans) that something is hidden there.
A computer can spot it in seconds but then you have to run it on the entirety of North America to find the hidden spots.
