I think Vance was savvy enough to understand the corsus honorum of US politics; recognizing that he needed to do (1) at least a menial stint in the armed forces, then (2) go to an elite law school, then (3) sell out his race by marrying a brownoid, jew, or chink. He met his wife in law school, so it might have just been convenient. I dont think Thiel had to coach Vance into doing it, Vance just knew back then that he wouldn't be trusted with power unless he acquired that social proof. If he hadnt, Thiel would have tapped someone else.
