Otherwise your a 30yo making $20/hr doing back breaking labour.

Was a welder for years.
Don't fall for it unless you genuinely LOVE welding and are willing to work constant overtime hours.
If you are a welder you are expected to love what you do and WANT to stay late every day and come in every Saturday, sometimes even Sundays.
If you don't, you will be replaced by an 18 year old Puerto Rican who will work 80 hours a week if he could.
If you just want to put in your 40 hours and go home, do another trade.
Plumber and electrician are both way better options.
but....although it's not technically a trade, if you can get into a good passivation company that pays well, do it. Easiest job in the world.
You put metal parts into buckets, then drop the buckets into a nitric acid, citric acid, or sodium dichromate solution...
Then you wait 30+ minutes, rinse, and repeat.
Some parts, especially copper coated parts, can sometimes mean waiting an hour or more.
During this time you just hang out. Eat a sandwich, chat with your coworkers, read a book, or even take a quick nap.
It's what I do currently and I'm never going back to welding. Welding sucks so bad.

Do mobile welding. My local guy makes 200-300 per hour before expenses, which probably aren't terrible if you're not getting some retarded huge truck for the job.

He got his name out there basically as "the mailbox guy" since all the HOAs around us require the same, shitty cast-iron mailbox and the supports fail after a couple years. So he just goes around and welds up everyone's mailboxes for like 200 a pop.

I didn't want to write a book but they're free-standing, single-piece ornate mailboxes. He fixes them, repaints then, and remounts the box with new hardware, and does it in-place with the mobile welding curtains. So he's in and out.

ah yeah that makes more sense. stuff like that or custom exhausts is good coin, probably the best thing a welder can be doing right now since AI 100% WILL come for welding.
Even when I started as a TIG welder ten years ago, my first job was operating a robot welder. The only actual welding I had to do was repair its mistakes, and it only made mistakes if I didn't clean it often enough.
The company started with about 14 welders on my shift. After they bought the robot welder it went down to three welders including myself.
My prediction is in a few years the only welders left will be doing stuff like your friend, artistic/luxury stuff.
The same thing happened to glass blowers a long time ago. You used to need a master glassblower to make you a decent vase. Now factories pump them out by the millions. The only glassblowers left are the ones making bongs and jewelry.

Yup, went to the local plumbing/pipe fitting union with a valid 6g Tig root & Stick hot pass and fill Certification, I paid $600 to take the test one time, thinking I'd go to the front of the line. I was told they aren't accepting applications for blue books, unless you are already employed by a Union Employer.

That 6 figures number is a pipe dream, unless you have grown your own business for the last 5 years.

Brother, I am an electrician, and I have one of the best paying jobs in the trades. Sorry you are too much of a retard to understand formulas like ohm's law. But I don't do back breaking work, and I have a great career. I don't work on Saturdays, unless I am doing side work, and if I am I charge the guy for a full weeks worth of work for my time on a Saturday. And they pay it, because it's cheaper than getting permits and doing it all the legit way.
I make 36$ an hour, but I charge people 100$/hour for my side job fee.

Even though they are looked down on, Plumbers are also quite a smart community. We both have to use our brains and have to figure out complicated problems in order to get the job done correctly.

>HVAC

Was also considering these. Electrician, HVAC, and Plumbing seem to be in demand pretty much everywhere.

I also live in an area that got its ass kicked by Hurricane Helen last year and is in the process of rebuilding so I figured when shit gets straightened out and people start rebuilding homes there might be demand.

Nigger what year do you think this is? The 20th century is gone. The unemployment rate for college graduates (28%) is now higher than the unemployment rate for non graduates and you're probably going to rack up $100,000 plus in college debt even if you go to a state school. Then on the far end of it you won't get hired because you're a white dude. The majority of college grads who are employed aren't employed in their area of study now, they're working at fucking Starbucks.

Holy shit you're completely clueless. A college degree is still a ticket to an easy life. Women are distorting the numbers because they get retarded degrees in the humanities. If you're a reasonably intelligent and ambitious man majoring in engineering or computer science you will find a job.

I'm not denying there are still good career paths that go through college; but they're shrinking. The H1B visa program watered down the markets for a lot of tech and engineering jobs so the return on that investment is less than it should be. Additionally a lot of these jobs are getting fucked by AI replacement, anything that entails thinking, writing, drafting and doing calculations is getting replaced so you need to pick a field that can't be replaced.

The fact that college degree work doesn't require you to do manual labor has ironically made it susceptible to AI replacement since a machine can more easily be made to think and calculate than it can to go do the wiring in a house.

I make $40/hr, but I've also been welding for over 15 years. I also started at $13-14/hr on year 1. People who think they're gonna make good money right out of school are delusional. I would also say getting into a union as young as possible is best if you actually want a career in trades.
Anonymous (ID: 0njN/OxP) United States No.513845404
Welding is a good skill but a bad profession.

Imagine inhaling toxic fumes every day while working with deadly electricity that can turn you into a vegetable if you accidently bump into the metal and complete the circuit.
Using visors you cannot see through and so peak around to start or continue welds causing your eyes to go bad.
Eventualy becoming sickly and half blind by middle age.

And then its a trade so some schlomo probably tries to get you to work 10+ hours a day and feel lucky because you can make a little more but no longer have a personal life.

You’ll never ever ever ever ever ever get rich working for someone else. The reason anybody hires somebody else is so that the person they hire can make them rich, not the other way around. Trades are good because you can learn an actual valuable skill fairly quickly that doesn’t require a huge start up cost to start doing on your own. Even better than trades is just basic services like lawn care, pool cleaning, etc. spend a year or two working for someone else, learn the business, go spend a few thousand dollars on equipment, knock on some doors, and make your initial investment back in the first week and eat up the profits from doing simple shit people would rather pay someone else to do than do themselves.

That’s the good thing about blue collar work. Most of the guys there are only there because they’re borderline mentally retarded or are drug addicts, so if you’re actually semi competent and reliable and can convey that in an interview, which is now as easy as not showing up in your pajamas and being able to speak in fully intelligible sentences, then you’ll have no problem getting and keeping a job. Nobody should be trying to be a career employee in the late great year of 2025 though, get your experience, save up some cash, and gtfo because you will be overworked and underpaid and it’s only going to get worse.

The asked me to demonstrate my skills assembling a (tower pic related)
I could tell immediately that these boneheads had tried to do it, and didn't know what they were doing. I looked around, and this was the only Aluminum job in the whole shop.
So I asked is this the only job, you need done? They had 6 welders fresh out of tech school, with no TIG training, and they were all standing around to watch me. They admitted that there was no full-time job, this was a one-off. I'm not gonna "demonstrate my skills" doing a job, with 6 noobs looking over my shoulder. If you wanna pay me to do the job, I'll do that. If you want to pay me to train 2 of your guys for a couple days, we can do that. What they really wanted was for their guys to learn. They gave me $2500 for 2 days, teaching.
Don't let people take advantage of you, but at the same time don't burn bridges.
2 weeks later they call me back and had steady Aluminum jobs coming in.
