Assuming that Russia is part of China's sphere of influence is retarded, but let's put this brainlet cope to one side. You see, in the event of war against China and Russia at the same time, the US will cease to exist as a military, economic and political entity. So what's Trump's team trying to gain is to at least ensure Russia's neutrality in the (inevitable) event of China-US war in the Pacific. A neutral Russia means Chinese warships won't be able to operate in the Arctic ocean and use it as launchpad for strikes into mainland US, for example. A detente with Russia is smart politics. Of course, Trump has neither political will or the intellect to actually achieve this.
