The oldest dog remains ever found were in Germany and Belgium and they were buried with grave goods. Showing that even back then they were not just considered utilitarian.

So while livestock can be held as pets and dogs can be eaten, these are not primary functions from an anthropological point of view. Are we going through this again? The main reason is that dogs provide too little meat for the food you have to give them. They’re also meat eaters, and they don’t get fat. Pigs, chickens and cows are not meat eaters, in fact chickens and pigs eat basically any left over slop humans can’t or won’t eat and turn that into usable food. Cows turn inedible grass into delicious beef. Pigs and chickens also breed like crazy so you can effectively multiply them without a problem as long as you have enough slop to feed them.
