Depends on where in CA, the state has so many different climates, even inside of metro areas. It's also literally Mexico at this point.

Also its not just about "not being poor"... you have to be VERY wealthy to enjoy CA. As in, you and your wife are both working, and both earning 200k/year. I have friends who are both earning 150k/year in Cupertino and they could only afford a marginal house because its 3 million for a house.

I made 130k/year in the SF Bay Area and the only parts I could afford were the Hispanic ghettos. No one enjoyed life there, everyone was too focused on their job/career and their money. There are so many people and you're always having to check traffic before you head out.

I took a job in NV that matched my CA salary and bailed. 9.3% income tax and 700k for a 2/1 in east Oakland fucking sucks. If I went back it would be to a place like Rocklin where housing, traffic, and the people aren't insane.

Sacramento area is probably the best place to be, relatively speaking.
Weather is great relative to the Midwest.
Some of the county areas are a bit nicer to own a few acres on. I'm a bit more suburban but I'm staying put given interest rates being shit and being locked to a good one.
