I have a feeling we're heading towards a situation similar to The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess, fertility is already starting to fall as immigration increases and food becomes more and more processed and devoid of real nutrition. The result of living like this for a few decades will be that people just sort of gradually lose the will to live until they can be herded towards any random catastrophe or obvious trap. The government may not stage a false war but rather mass unspoken yearning for real meaning or a reduction in population will sort of force it to happen unconsciously.

It doesn't make sense the mice would all die out when they have infinite resources. The behavior change of the mice is probably explained by r/K selection theory

The thing about the mouse utopia is that we seemingly haven't reached the stage of decay that the mouse utopia did, and most likely never will on a societal level.
Even now, with many people showing late stage "beautiful ones" behavior, you still find plenty of people who raise children willingly and function socially.
If we were heading in the mouse utopia's direction for the entirety of the species, the most developed countries would all be like Korea, but they aren't.

They were testing for cause of death, and even beyond that; they'd take males and females from dying universes, and transferred them to populations of healthy mice Y'know what happened? None of the healthy mice changed. The mice from the utopia kept being broken loners til they died. This is something that can't be solved by new environment, for lots it's already too \late.
