I have an uncle who is a county sheriff who has spent all his life in law enforcement. He started as a beat cop but spent most of his time in LEO as a CSI. He is a pretty stand up guy and exactly the type of fair and detailed person you would want investigating something

However he also says that most cops, three quarters in his estimation, are not fit for purpose. They are under trained, under supervised, clueless about the law and generally have bad attitudes towards the public. They see themselves as enforcers not protectors. He says that proper pre-employment psych screening should have screened out a lot of the applicants. He believes that a lot of the bad forces are structured so that they are intentionally low effectiveness people bullies as thats the best way to push political agendas. Its better to have a corrupt mob under your control than a force of legit police officers if thats your target

Former trooper. My experience was guys on the bottom are cool, guys at the top are the worse type of people. Whenever an agency is investigated for corruption, the people they put in are substantially worse. A lot of the people there were pretty normal, just often times more street smart for obvious reasons. But they’re not always as street smart as they like to pretend.
Example: If an agency has a charge of discriminating against black people, the new command staff that comes in will then discriminate against cops.
Newer cops who are younger and white (think below the age of 30) are often times cut throat and only out for themselves. Women are almost always drama. I’ve heard of women being good from an admin POV, but every female trooper I’ve met had an over inflated ego (beyond that of a normal trooper) or we’re genuinely abhorrent in personal conduct and had a who but me attitude. I’ve never met a female trooper I’ve respected. Black road troopers/cops are extremely competent in my experience even tho their scores are generally lower on tests.

My experience is the more specialized an LE officer is, the more down to earth he is. Once he is true command staff or is gunning for a position, he sells his soul.

I’ve never had long term interaction with command staff and thought they were decent people, but to be fair my former shithole agency is renowned for only promoting vermin supreme to command staff

The real secret to LE is knowing when to use your discretion. Not every law needs to be enforced. People underestimate how many laws are in the books solely to give you probable cause for someone you know is up to no good

I have lots of cops in my friends and family circle. 85% of local cops in the US are normal people trying to do good for the community. 15% need fired for being assholes or sociopaths.

I’m unironically thankful for the job they do. It means I don’t have to interact with niggers or junkies. I’d be homicidal if I was forced to do their job.
