Dictatorships are more accountable to the people, because the people always know who to blame and can hardly be baited into infighting. It's why many dictatorships present a foreign enemy in their propaganda to their people.

Democracies on the other hand have a far more complicated structure of governance which obfuscates who is responsible for bad decisions. Constant blame shifting between power groups and leaders avoiding accountability are core features of a democracy.

In theory one can vote out a bad government in a democracy. Time and time again we have seen however that the people never get truly voted out. Most governments are some form of coalition affair. The system itself becomes the ruler and nobody knows who to vote out. Dictatorships don't bother with elections, safe for optics. Revolution becomes the only way to get rid of dictators. Aware of that, dictators pay close attention to the mood of their people. The authoritarian bragain requires that dictators make good decisions to stay in power.

You're supposed to just keep killing people until somebody decent is in charge. Elections were an attempt to circumvent this but it obvious why this doesn't work. It doesn't work any other way because sociopaths and foreign agents exist that will always try harder and play dirtier than decent people to get to the top.
The question then becomes, how do you make it so that you don't need to kill many people to get somebody decent in charge, and to protect against sociopaths and foreign agents? You make a dedicated nobility born and bred to rule, who's a prisoner in a gilded cage, made to rule or else.
Also you make sure the government scope is as small as possible by killing more people when it starts to overreach.
Living a just and free life is pretty brutal but it's the only way to stop evil people form ruling over you making you into a slave.
