Here we also use methane from wastewaters for heating purposes. Things are automated, and on more industrial scale. And now, wastewater treatment plant does not need external natural gas, and can generate heat and some of its electricity needs by it.

This year new law came into power, that organic waste have been collected seperately. And will be used in bioreactors to generate methane. To reduce need for imported russian natural gas. Well, our natural gas gets now imported from USA now, but still. Will need to import less.

They do this on some farms using cow manure in the US too. I passed by one once, it smelled like 100 rotting skunks mixed with a wastewater treatment plant

There is pipeline connecting Baltics with Finland. But gas deliveries for our market comes from Lithuanian terminal, where they deliver LNG from USA.

There was time when purchased also gas from Kazahstan, via pipelines from Russia. To my knowledge, it have been halted for some time now.
Not sure, are Russia storing some of their gas in Inčukalns. As some years ago, for Latvia there was better gas rates, as they were pumping gas in summertime (when extraction wells in Siberia were working) in Inčukalns underground storage side, so in winter could use it for supplying Leningrad oblast. Might be that it is still happening. May be they found some other storage site.

Kinda yes. Methane tank is in lower left corner. And sediment after fermentation is used as fertilizer. But fertilizer is not really as a byproduct. It is more as part of technical process. It have been present as long those wastewater treatment plants were working.

From industrial gazification plants, they put that gas into pipelines, and those pipes were present in worker apartments. If they paid "subscription fee", then it was connected to either oven, or gas lightning fixtures. If not, then that entry point was sealed with wax. Some guys wanted to illegally connect to network. But as there carbon monoxide was involved, quite often they died in their sleep because of carbon monoxide poisoning. Because of some gas leakage.

Cows and methane are bad in the west so much that (((policymakers))) want cows to wear fart backpacks, short of wiping them out.
