I think this is the source of the confusion. It is anti communist. It shows communism as well intentioned but leading to horrific abuses. What loses a lot of people is that it doesn't offer or defend an alternative. The pigs ended up the same as the capitalists. There is no hope or way out. They traded one miserable life for an even worse one but the story offers no working ideology. Which I guess is typical of orwells work and perhaps life in general. People want some sort of working system to latch on to and put all their effort behind but such a thing does not exist.

My complaint with animal farm more than anything is the sympathetic character of benjamin the goat. A thinly veiled jew, shown as a knowing but powerless victim, when the reality of communism was anything but.

It's actually an incredibly entertaining book. Possibly one of the best books ever written, I know I'm hardly the first to say this. But not a single wasted word
My point being if you've put it off you should stop doing that, it is worth it, even from a selfish entertainment factor.
