Nowdays, if you refuse to enter a plea during a trial (or "stand mute"), the court just enters a 'not guilty' plea on your behalf. Back before the Enlightenment, however, you actually could stand mute before the court, and they couldn't enter a plea on your behalf. I was silent with them for something like 18 hours, then finally some part of my brain realized I should ask for a lawyer, so after hours of them trying to get me to say anything, I asked for a lawyer. I think they were fuming but that is just a guess on an old, fuzzy memory.

You do have to identify yourself. The jews have misrepresented this law to illegal immigrants and criminals who don't want to identify themselves. Reasonable suspicion is not complex. The police officer decides what RS is... not the suspect. If you believe the officer is wrong you have to fight it in court. And then the judge ultimately decides if the RS was warranted or not.

All failing to identify yourself does is give the police officer more RS to detain you and investigate further. And emboldening his case to require your identification. This always goes their way... in despite of the states laws around identifying suspects.

Depends on why you were stopped, and the stop and ID laws in your state. If it's not stop and ID, and the cop is just fishing, eventually he'll get bored and leave. If it is stop and ID, and you fail to ID, you can be arrested. They'll take you to the jail, empty your pockets, figure out who you are, and then maybe they'll release you with a ticket. Worst case they can't identify you and throw you in prison, and let the other inmates beat you up for not talking.

In my state, they get to ask my name, dob, and address, but I'm not required to carry ID on me or required to show it when asked. He COULD have still written me up for speeding, and would have been right to do so; but I certainly could have made the situation worse by escalating a traffic stop to a civil rights issue.

The first goal of any interaction with law enforcement agents should be to avoid incriminating yourself.
The second goal should be to minimize the total length of the interaction, including follow up interactions like cops harassing you, getting arrested and put on trial, etc. That's why the first thing you say when a cop accosts you is "am I free to go?". This is the shortest sentence that gets a "yes" response and allows you to end the interaction immediately. It's the fastest win strat. After that you clarify the nature of the interaction (arrest, detention, or the cop just fucking around), which also serves both goals of not incriminating yourself and bringing the interaction to an end as soon as possible.

Only know about English common law. In this country, once you are arrested you have to have a paper trail or they're in big shit. If you stay silent AND refuse to sign anything, they have no option other than to put you before a judge, or a magistrate if it's a minor offence.
In a magistrate court, if you remain silent they will remove you from the court and competent legal experts will decide if what you did was a crime.

Being booked into jail sucks: they take all your stuff and log it and put it in a bag (good luck getting your cash back). This includes your clothes. You're stripped naked, given prison clothes, and then they take your mugshot. Then you get put in a cell with actual criminals and degenerates, in a nice enclosed cold area that smells bad, until they decide to let you out. Getting let out requires a lot of paperwork that you have to read carefully because if you don't sign, they won't let you out, but they might try to trick you into signing something bad. Oh and you're tired and stressed as fuck. You get your stuff back, change, and then you're standing outside the county jail and probably have to call a cab or ride public transit because they don't just take you back to your car.

Unless your time and safety is worth literally nothing, try to avoid getting arrested and booked into jail.

Here in the USA, if you don't give them your identifying information they can detain you to investigate who you are. So, you aren't legally obligated, but it works against it. That's the only thing that's really going to fuck up that kind of strategy. In my expert legal opinion it's best to give ID and respectfully decline to talk to them if they press you, "I'm sorry, but I'm not answering questions."
It also depends, if it's a citation you're trying to hide from you may as well just get it over with. Speaking of citations you also need to prove a car is registered / insured in many states. You can make them prove it, but, again it'll probably go a lot better if you just hand them the documents instead inviting a full search of yourself and the vehicle by stonewalling.

The main, and only good thing, of what I did was that I didn't incriminate myself. The neutral thing was that I kept the encounter polite and non-hostile. If I had gotten a ticket, I would have smiled and told the officer to have a nice day.

It's possible the cop didn't actually clock me, but if not he had a damn good guess for how fast I was going. But he and I both know that if I had admitted guilt, it was over. There would have been no follow up court case of me challenging the ticket regardless of what he wrote on it. He could have made his entire monthly quota on me. Instead, I left it up in the air for the state to prove, which makes the bar for him and his DA buddy higher, which is how it's supposed to work. And for him, it was easier to go back to his speed trap and catch some other sucker who will admit to speeding on bodycam.

Again, I'm not saying doing this gets you out of speeding tickets. It doesn't. The cop was feeling nice. I'm saying that not admitting guilt is like half the game. This is not even true. People incriminate themselves without being given the miranda speech all the time. The "protection" of miranda rights is much more limited than you think.

If anything this is so you do not get into more trouble or so you aren't pressured into saying anything incriminating, eventually it will be decided afterwards at the station, so if a cop wants you out of the vehicle there is nothing you can do about it.

For a law abiding citizen, most cops will let you go because it is a hassle for them too.

Depending on your circumstance you could demand to know why you're being detained ect. if they're going to charge you, they will anyway.
