I think the cultural norms around burial are kinda gay desu. spend your entire life taking from the earth only to either pump your remains full of toxins and sealed in a box in a confined area or incinerated into ash which will only be returned to nature if you explicitly ask?

imo there should be national parks which are classified as ancestral forests. instead of a headstone, you get a tree planted above your fresh and clean corpse to feed new life. the living would be able to walk among these trees knowing they each represent a real person, the tallest of them being their furthest flung ancestors.

The Norwegian state crematorium capacity had serious issues during covid / sudden death syndrome. In a state with a tiny population of 5,6 million (of which about 1,6 million have non-Norwegian background), modern furnace equipment, and endless supplies of natural gas.
We have 25 crematoriums, and the capacity is 30.000 cremations a year.
Now compare this to severe fuel rationing in 1940-45, and 6 gorillion in 5 years.
It really gets the noggin' joggin'...

Best to get your ashes interrred in a Columbarium rather than scattered - that photo looks like those people wanted to be scattered in the desert which is what was done. At least they were ground up and not bone fragments like some places scatter to save costs

I'm good friends with a funeral home owner / cremation guy. You know how he "disposes" of peoples' ashes? He goes fishing and dumps them off the boat. No ceremony, no final words, just empties them out like a bag of cat litter.

It caught me off guard last time because he says "This looks like a good spot!", then whipped out these bags and dumped them out.

I'd be ok with it if it was my remains. People die around the clock. Some have no one and no resources. At least he cares enough to take them on the lake one last time. Hospice for sibling. Nurse says the saddest ones are the ones with nobody to visit them. Your buddy gave them a little bit of something and it's better than nothing.
